Presbyopia

Presbyopia or Longsightedness

Vista cansada

Presbyopia is one of the most common refractive errors because sooner or later affects us all regardless of our sex, age, food habits and even genetics.

Presbyopia occurs because of the aging of the lens inside the eye called crystalline that  loses the ability to focus on objects, what is called accommodation. There is an annoying problem.

Traditionally, this problem has been solved with glasses or contact lenses but ophthalmic surgery can provide a solution to presbyopia that allows to avoid reading glasses.

Looking to the future without glasses

Mirando al futuro

Currently, main research projects are focused on the cornea treatment by excimer laser and the use of lenses which are placed inside the eye to provide vision to all distances.

Depending on, these lenses are placed in the anterior or posterior chamber of the eye, avoiding the patient´s lens extraction. They provide a continuous focus from far and near, representing a revolution which allows the patient to forget about glasses.

Concerning the presbyopia correction by Excimer Laser, VISSUM Corporación Oftalmológica has a pioneered technique on laser treatment to correct presbyopia : PREBYLASIK. This is an operation based on LASIK technique and adapted to the refractive features of presbyopia, which has yielded excellent results.

First Symptoms

primeros sintomas

The best way to avoid a negative influence of presbyopia on our daily tasks is going to the ophthalmologist at first symptoms in order to recommend the best solution to our case.

These are the first symptoms that usually begin after 40 years of age :

  • Difficulty in focusing at far distance after setting the view for a while in a nearby object.
  • Letters begin to be blurred, "dancing" together and we get tired of using close-up vision.
  • Moving in an unconscious way the book or newspaper we are reading to see better.
  • Headaches.
  • Tearing, itching, sleepiness while reading.
  • Half-closing the eyes to try to accommodate better.

Presbyopia detection. Visual acuity

deteccion

In order to detect if a person suffers from Presbyopia, the Ophthalmologist must examine thoroughly their visual acuity.

The patient places a reading test at 30cm away to assess whether he is able to read the letters of the test separately with each eye and with their usual distance glasses. If you see better holding the test at a distance then you have presbyopia.
