Biomaterials

Our team has created and patented:

  • Different biotolerable, bioadhesive and biodegradable substances, which represent an alternative system to stitches for closing and sealing ocular incisions.
  • New materials for strengthening ocular tissues that lead to the possibility of an effective solution to degenerative pathologies that induce the weakening of tissues.

Glaucoma

Our team has developed a new valve concept for glaucoma that is more effective and is implantable using a more advanced surgical technique.
We research into the early detection and new treatments for the solution to this disease, also known as ‘silent blindness’.

Intraocular lens and visual quality

VISSUM is a reference centre internationally renowned for its important advances in cataract surgery especially with the use of laser for the treatment of cataracts, the creation of extremely innovative cataract surgery by microincision (MICS concept “Minimal Incision Cataract Surgery”) and the development of new concepts of accommodating lenses for Presbyopia (NULENS, lens, LUMINA lens).

Molecular biology and microbiology

The Molecular Biology Laboratory was opened in 2000 and since then it has played an important role in the scientific advance of everything related to the study of the molecular processes involved in ocular pathologies and in the detection and diagnosis of microorganisms that cause infections in the eyes.

Ocular surface

The Ocular Cytology Laboratory has been developed to help in the diagnosis of patients who particularly suffer dry eye of any origin, as well as for patients who suffer ocular allergy, conjunctivitis and keratitis.

The Cell Culture, Cellular Therapy and Tissue Engineering Laboratory was created to treat pathologies that involve the ocular surface. Our cell culture laboratory has been pioneer:

  • In the development of platelet-rich plasma (RPR) for use in ophthalmology. Our team has created platelet-rich plasma autologous eye drops that continue nowadays to be a reference in the effective treatment of diseases such as dry eye and corneal ulcers.
  • In the development of the surgical technique and the pigments for therapeutic and cosmetic keratopigmentation.

Refractive surgery and visual quality

The Vissum team pioneered refractive surgery in Spain, with the first surgeries conducted in 1991. Since then our team has developed and validated different therapeutic methods for the improvement and optimisation of the ocular dioptre.
Our team’s experience has allowed us to develop our own techniques such as the customized Lasik or Presbylasik next-generation technologies.

Vitreous-retina

Our team has analysed the efficacy and safety of different drugs for the treatment of patients with age-related macular degeneration and studies the causes, predisposing factors and socio-economic impact of  diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), and retinal detachment.
